A few weeks ago we were sent a new game to play with. When the box arrived Scott asked what was inside and so I told him – Don’t be a Donkey – at which point my darling daughter started howling with laughter as she thought I was insulting him! Don’t be a Donkey isn’t a random form of insult but indeed a really fun game to play that aimed 2-4 players aged 4+.
Inside the box you will find the following:
4 headbands, 8 donkey ears, 3 carrots, 16 donkey cards, a donkey nose and instructions. Assembly is minimal and just involves sliding them into place between the grips on the headbands.
Aim of the game: simple, Don’t be a Donkey!!
Setting up: Each player needs to put on a headband with both ears flipped down. Place the donkey nose within reach. The number of players determines the number of carrots that should be placed in the middle; there should be one less carrot than the number of players (think as though you’re playing musical chairs!). If there are 3 players then 4 of the cards (same colour) should be removed but otherwise all cards need to be shuffled well and dealt out face down to all players.
To play: 2 players – keep the cards facing down and pile into a stack. Take turns turning the top card over and placing in the middle (like snap!). If the card that has just been placed matches the colour of the card underneath it a player shouts ‘DONKEY!’ and the players have to try to grab the carrot. The player that doesn’t get the carrot has to flip one of their ears up. This carries on until a player has both ears up and loses the carrot for the third time, at which point they have to wear the donkey nose and become the Donkey.
3 or 5 players – choose one card from your hand to give to the player on your right. Place it face down on the floor/table and when all players have done this the dealer will shout ‘Pass’. When this happens you pick up the card you have just received. Once a player has 4 cards the same colour they shout ‘DONKEY!’ at which point everyone needs to try to grab a carrot. The rest of this is just like with the 2 player version – the player that doesn’t get the carrots has to flip one of their ears up. This carries on until a player has both ears up and loses the carrot for the third time, at which point they have to wear the donkey nose and become the Donkey.
The kids really love the game and how silly it makes the other one look. I love that it’s a nice quick game that doesn’t require batteries or an age to set up…all of which are invaluable to me. I think it would make a great game for all members of the family to play at Christmas and can’t wait to get my brother to have a go!
